About the Site

Why did you do this thing?

I wanted to practice some web development and find a way to keep in touch with long-distance family and friends in the Fantasy Football offseason. Right around that time, Vox posted rules for a Bachelor Fantasy League, and I'd already been watching the show for a couple of seasons with my wife. Naturally, I made a league and roped people into it with the promise that I'd keep track of scores. Since then the site has grown in scope and use, with features added as requested or when I think something would be fun.

Since then, I followed on to the Rose Buddies podcast, and adopted the rules tweaks proposed there. Since this site was mentioned on the podcast, it's largely been populated by podcast listeners and the site has adapted accordingly, mostly becoming a fansite at this point.

What is it about the Bachelor(ette)?

It's just a completely bonkers television series/cultural phenomenon. Beyond the usual madness of reality television, there are a couple of reasons why this show is so compelling to me: for one, it's a fascinating exercise in storytelling. The way the show attempts to weave a semi-coherent story is just so clumsy and beautiful and weird. For two, it's a fascinating exercise in game design. Contestants have different playstyles, and are constantly dancing around a set of unspoken rules that the show never presents. So I like the show a lot, and I like trying to figure out how much of the show is real emotion versus production.

What are the plans for the site?

The thing I like the most is making new kinds of visualizations, so I'll probably keep chugging along with those. I'd also like to add more interactivity within and between leagues. Things like being able to trash talk within your league, rank everybody on a global leaderboard, etc.

If there's a feature you'd like to see, feel free to get in touch!

What's up with the name?

It's a reference to Aristotle's The Sand Reckoner, which posits that there is a number for anything finite. In other words, if it exists, you can count it, no matter how meaningless or insignificant. This site takes that idea to the extreme by applying it to the Bachelor(ette).

That may make it sound like I've got my head way too far up my own ass, which is fair. On the other hand, so does a lot of Bachelor Nation (as evidenced by the fact that they call themselves "Bachelor Nation").
